Subject 2 Two men were climbing over the wall, and landing in the way, they quickly caught up with our pilgrim. The name of one was Formalist, and the name of the other was Hypocrisy. They joined Christian and he struck up a conversation with them. We can notice several things about these men who did not enter in at the gate, but climbed over the wall. One thing that is evident about these men is that they are quite nimble and light-footed; they climbed the wall without great difficulty and overtook Christian with their quick pace. A second thing that appears concerning them is their purpose in entering the way; they sought neither deliverance from the wrath to come nor relief from any burden—but rather, they sought the praise of others. Finally, we see no book in their hands—it is the lack of this book that explains the other differences.
